TUKWILA, Wash. – The 2024 fall season is off to a strong start for the Wenatchee Valley College Men's Soccer team outscoring opponents 7-0 across a pair of wins to begin the new year. WVC tallied a 6-0 win against Portland CC and then backed that up with a 1-0 victory against South Puget Sound during the NWAC Friendlies on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In the season opener on Tuesday against Portland CC, the Knights tallied a goal in the 14th minute and never looked back. Elvin Turcios recorded the tally for WVC. Shota Kato added another goal in the 29th minute that was assisted by Benny Mejia for the 2-0 halftime lead.
Felipe Haro then took over in the second half. Just over a minute into the second stanza, Haro recorded the third goal for the Knights. He went on to make it a hat trick with goals in the 62nd and 76th minutes for the 5-0 lead. Kevin Castillo closed the scoring in the 77th minute for the 6-0 final score.
WVC generated 10 shots on goal, while the defense stifled Portland allowing just two total shots on goal, both saves for Luis Hernandez. Hernandez and Osvaldo Sanchez shared the combined shutout, with Sanchez starting the first 45 minutes and Hernandez closing the shutout.
During day two, it was a battle throughout against South Puget Sound. After the teams played a scoreless first half, all of that changed right away in the second 45.
Just over a minute out of the break, Joshua Aguirre found the back of the net off an assist by Pierre Vega for the 1-0 lead in the 47th minute.
That lead held up, as the Knights defense posted a second straight shutout. Sanchez played all 90 minutes in goal coming up with five saves. WVC generated 12 total shots, with eight landing on target. Raul Mata, Mejia and Vega paced the Knights with three shots apiece.
