Currently working at Wenatchee Valley College and a former graduate of WVC, Francisco Sarmiento-Torres has been part of the college community for the past six years, teaching in the Agriculture program. Sports have always been an important part of the WVC experience for him, helping create a sense of unity, building community, and bringing fans together from all over the world.
For Francisco, soccer stands out as the best sport because of its ability to bring people together without requiring them to speak the same language. Soccer unites people and creates a sense of community, allowing everyone to come together for 90 minutes and watch the magic of the game at all levels.
Helping student-athletes succeed at WVC is closely connected to the work of being an instructor. Whether it is in the classroom or on the field, Francisco wants to see students succeed. Student-athletes have to work on both sides of the coin—pushing themselves physically while also being mentally prepared for whatever challenges come their way, whether that is a test or game day.
Two quotes that reflect Francisco's appreciation for the impact of sports are:
“Football is more than just a game. It can bring hope and joy to people's lives.” — Didier Drogba
“Football is played with your head. Your feet are just the tools.” — Andrea Pirlo
